African Dream Herb seeds can be found washed up on beeches throughout the world. These giant seeds have a long history as a powerful vivid dream inducer when mixed in a pipe with tobacco or even when mixed with your favorite herb. The plant has a long history and appears naturally from near Durban northwards throughout tropical Africa and into India, Asia and Australia. The extraodinarily large seeds are often carried or worn on necklaces and pendants as lucky charms, but since Africa is a culture that believes that contact with their ancestors comes through dreams, they have found and cultivated plants that help achieve this spiritual connection, and this is one of them.
TRADITIONAL PREPARATION: Depending on their purpose, traditional preparations of the Sea Bean vary widely. When used to induce lucid dreams and communication with the spirit world, the inner meat of the seed was either consumed directly, or the meat would be chopped, dried, mixed with other herbs like tobacco and smoked just before bedtime.
MEDICINAL USES: In addition to the aforementioned uses, Entada rheedii was made into a thickened salve or poultice that was applied to swollen hands, feet, limbs, as well as painful joints and loins to ease pain and to expedite the healing process. A strong tea was made from the leaves to induce vomiting in patients with stomach aches, abdominal pains, and diarrhea. A weaker tea was made from the bark and used to help reduce the high temperature in fever patients.
TRADITIONAL EFFECTS: There are many unscientific reports and anecdotal stories about the effects of African Dream Herb, which fall into two basic categories. The first category of reports claim that the seed increases one’s ability to fall asleep and stay asleep, as well as producing longer lasting, more vivid and memorable dreams; but not necessarily lucid dreams. The second category of reports describe the seed’s effect as an entry into the dream world, the seed promotes increased awareness during REM sleep, making it easier for the sleeper to realize that they are dreaming and thus giving them an edge in achieving lucidity. Either way, African Dream Herb has achieved a well deserved reputation for being a dream herb par excellence, only comparable to Calea Zacatechichi.
